VOID Tamper-Evident Tape for E-commerce Packaging
Tamper-evident tape does not stop a parcel being opened — it makes opening visible and irreversible. For e-commerce and fulfillment operations, that distinction is what turns a disputed delivery into a documented claim.
How the VOID effect actually works
The tape carries a hidden release layer between the face film and the adhesive. When the tape is lifted, the layers separate in a controlled way: part of the coating transfers to the carton, spelling out a message, while the removed tape carries the complementary image. Because the transfer happens on separation, the mark cannot be put back, and the carton cannot be resealed without it being obvious.
This is different from simply using a strong tape that tears the carton. A torn box suggests mishandling; a VOID message states that the seal was opened.
Where it fits in e-commerce fulfillment
- High-value shipments — electronics, branded goods, cosmetics, small machinery
- Returns processing — gives the warehouse a visual check before accepting a return
- Marketplace seller requirements — some channels expect visible tamper evidence on premium SKUs
- Internal transfer — sealed totes moving between warehouse, 3PL and retail
- Subscription and sample boxes — deters partial content removal in transit
VOID vs residue vs plain security tape
| Type | What it leaves | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| VOID tape | Readable "VOID" message on surface | Where a clear, photographed message supports claims |
| Residue tape | Sticky adhesive film on surface | Where a visible sticky mess is sufficient deterrent |
| Printed security tape | Brand text, no transfer effect | Brand presentation plus basic seal integrity |
Specifying it correctly
Two things decide whether VOID tape performs on your line. The first is the surface: VOID transfer works well on most carton stocks, but recycled board with high dust content and some low-surface-energy plastics reduce the effect. Always test on your actual carton.
The second is application temperature and pressure. Applied cold or with light pressure, the bond may not fully develop, and the transfer can be patchy. Apply at room temperature and press the seal firmly along its full length.
Colors, printing and MOQ
Standard supply includes white, yellow, blue, red and green, with custom text and logo printing available. Custom printing carries a higher minimum order quantity than plain stock because of plate and setup costs — send width, color and artwork for an exact figure.
A note on expectations
Tamper-evident tape is a detection and deterrence layer, not a physical barrier. It does not prevent a determined person from opening a parcel; it ensures that opening is visible and cannot be undone. Used alongside good sealing practice, weight checks and photography at dispatch, it materially strengthens how claims and returns are handled.
